Pathology Assistants are trained health professionals who work closely with Pathologists to perform a variety of tasks. An Assistant’s skills can be valuable during complex surgical procedures, as well as when an extra pair of hands is needed for research or lab work. A Pathologist Assistant typically spends most of their time handling specimens. Evaluating specimens removed during surgery, conducting thorough examinations and submitting samples for testing are all key parts of this role. They might also assist a Pathologist in diagnosing a disease, but the final diagnosis is the Pathologist’s responsibility alone. Pathologist Assistants typically help organize and manage the pathology suite, morgue or lab.
