Talent Managers represent people working in creative fields, overseeing their contracts and ensuring they get favorable deals. They have a roster of industry contacts and are always networking and making connections with casting directors, producers, publishers and business owners working in the same fields as their clients. People who work in Talent Management must have a keen eye for talented individuals, as their business model rests on finding creatives who will land jobs. They must be exceptionally skilled in sales and communication to establish trust both with their clients and clients’ prospective employers. Daily responsibilities are varied and require an entrepreneurial mindset and a confident demeanor. In addition to booking gigs, analyzing contracts and negotiating higher pay rates, they must be able to create marketing strategies and arrange performances.

A Talent Manager, or Talent Representative, typically oversees and helps shape the careers of creative individuals. They connect artists, musicians, dancers and writers with opportunities, negotiate contracts and introduce clients to agents. Talent Managers might also help creatives develop a personal brand and maintain a strong presence on social media.

  • Strong knowledge of business, market values and profiting in a competitive industry
  • Excellent understanding of traditional and digital marketing, including building brands, SEO, social media management and public relations
  • Ability to see the bigger picture and connect clients with opportunities they’re well-suited to and likely to get
  • Exceptional communication and analytical skills, with a clear understanding of what true talent looks like within relevant fields of expertise
  • Financial savviness, knowledge of managing resources and maximizing ROI
  • Persuasion, negotiation and schedule management skills for attracting clients and winning high-profit margin contracts
