A Sheet Metal Worker allows construction projects and manufacturing processes to be successfully completed to benefit both their employer and the customer. Many Sheet Metal Workers work in the construction industry installing, repairing and maintaining ductwork that allows heating, cooling and ventilation systems to function optimally. They may also be responsible for producing and installing rain gutters, outdoor signage and siding.
What does a Sheet Metal Worker do?
A Sheet Metal Worker, or Sheet Metal Technician, works with thin sheets of metal to produce and install various types of products. On a typical Sheet Metal Work job description, their listed duties may include measuring and marking raw materials, cutting sheet metal to desired sizes using specialized equipment and fastening sheet metal into place via soldering, welding and other techniques.
Responsibilities
A Sheet Metal Worker should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Sheet Metal Worker should be able to execute:
  • Studying blueprints, diagrams and specification sheets to gain a thorough understanding of the work required
  • Choosing the right sheet metals to use for a project based on the plan or blueprints
  • Precisely measuring sheet metal and marking it at the proper places to comply with required specifications
  • Using cutting tools to prepare sheet metal for use in subsequent steps in manufacturing or as-is installation
  • Shaping, drilling and bending sheet metal to fabricate parts or components
  • Welding, bolting, brazing and soldering sheet metal to join pieces together
Required Skills
A competitive Sheet Metal Worker will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Analytical skills to interpret technical drawings
  • Arithmetic skills to convert measurements
  • Ability to utilize tools such as benders, pliers, snips and shears
  • Computer skills to utilize computer-aided drafting and manufacturing software
  • Ability to remain upright for long periods
  • Ability to move raw materials and tools from one place to another
