Science teachers are generally high school teachers who specialize in one or more science topics, such as biology, chemistry or physics. They teach students in upper grades, usually ninth grade or higher. Science teachers may be employed full-time by a school and teach different classes throughout the day, or they may work part-time or as a substitute. When not working directly with students, science teachers create lesson plans, grade and review assignments, and meet with other staff and parents. They may also pursue further education to expand their teaching ability as it relates to new content or technology.
What does a Science Teacher do?
A science teacher or specialized high school teacher educates high school students to prepare them for postsecondary school or the workforce. Their main duties include planning and instructing lessons, assessing and supporting students’ strengths and weaknesses, and adapting and enforcing classroom policies.
Responsibilities
A Science Teacher should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Science Teacher should be able to execute:
  • Planning and instructing lessons on science topics, such as biology, chemistry or physics
  • Enforcing classroom management and school administrative policies
  • Assessing and accommodating students’ learning needs and styles
  • Using technology to deliver lessons and other educational materials
  • Communicating effectively with students, parents and staff
Required Skills
A competitive Science Teacher will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with students, other staff and parents
  • Strong interpersonal skills to understand the individual needs of their students
  • Problem-solving skills to create broad and individualized educational solutions
  • Exceptional organizational skills to plan and deliver lessons, assignments and tests
  • Time management abilities for classes and when performing administrative tasks, lesson planning and grading
