What does a Petroleum Engineer do?
Petroleum Engineers, or Oil and Gas Engineers, develop systems and technologies for extracting and producing oil and natural gas. Duties you may include in a Petroleum Engineer job description are creating plans for facilities that extract oil and gas, improving drilling and production processes and overseeing gas and oil field equipment installation and operation.
Responsibilities
A Petroleum Engineer should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Petroleum Engineer should be able to execute:
  • Conducting site analyses to determine the best extraction strategy based on rock and reservoir location
  • Creating schematics, plans and blueprints to guide the installation of gas and oil field equipment
  • Refining systems and facilities to overcome problems that arise during drilling and production
  • Developing project plans that identify the goals, budget, timeline and potential risks of extraction and production projects
  • Overseeing the installation and operation of oil and gas equipment
  • Supervising and delegating tasks to Engineers-in-Training and Technicians
Required Skills
A competitive Petroleum Engineer will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Proficiency in utilizing analytical and scientific software, computer-aided design tools, project management applications and other software
  • In-depth knowledge of geology, chemistry, physics and best practices in gas and oil extraction and production
  • Advanced mathematical and analytical skills to perform calculations and analyze data
  • Communication skills to conduct meetings with management and collaborate with other engineers, scientists and technicians
  • Leadership skills to supervise, coach and train technicians and engineers-in-training
  • Familiarity with federal, state and local laws and regulations that govern oil and gas extraction and production
