Network Technicians typically work for IT firms or corporations as members of the IT department. They work closely with IT staff and company employees to coordinate installations and software updates. Their job is to make routine repairs to computer hardware or software and determine the best devices to protect against cyber attacks and store digital information. They may also be responsible for giving presentations on how to troubleshoot standard network issues and writing instructions for employees to reference when navigating company networks.
What does a Network Technician do?
A Network Technician, or Network Maintenance Technician, is responsible for managing installations and repairs for network systems. Their duties include responding to maintenance requests regarding system defects and other issues, troubleshooting problems with network systems by running tests and maintaining inventory for computer hardware.
Responsibilities
A Network Technician should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Network Technician should be able to execute:
  • Designing and installing computer networks, connections and cabling
  • Troubleshooting system failures and identifying roadblocks in the network
  • Fixing problems in LAN infrastructure and testing and configuring software
  • Maintaining and repairing hardware including peripheral devices
  • Evaluating network performance to improve the network
  • Scheduling upgrades and maintenance without interrupting business workflow
Required Skills
A competitive Network Technician will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Experience with network and system efficiency to implement network solutions
  • Understanding of how to install and configure network equipment
  • Ability to communicate with people with various levels of technical knowledge
  • Diagnostic and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot problems and find solutions
  • Proficiency in computers, software and database systems
  • Dexterity when handling manual repairs and tests
