Funeral Directors typically work in funeral homes and crematoriums. One of their primary responsibilities is to help mourners make difficult decisions, so they must be empathetic and compassionate. A Funeral Director also has to follow local, state and federal laws regarding service pricing, business licensing and body preparation. Therefore, this job requires the ability to understand complex regulations and take the steps necessary to comply with them.
A Funeral Director plans and executes each aspect of a funeral service, from the display of remains to the placement of flower arrangements around the casket or urn. Their duties include meeting with family members of the deceased, placing obituaries in local newspapers, finding pallbearers and making burial or cremation arrangements.
A Funeral Director should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Funeral Director should be able to execute:
- Helping family members and friends make decisions regarding flowers, music, prayers, readings and other aspects of a funeral service
- Advising loved ones on burial and cremation options
- Filling out legal paperwork
- Scheduling viewings, burials and other events
- Assisting family members with life insurance matters
- Coordinating flower delivery, catering, transportation and other related services
A competitive Funeral Director will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to handle delicate situations with grace and professionalism
- Basic computer skills, such as word processing and spreadsheets
- Strong attention to detail
- Knowledge of local, state and federal laws
- In-depth understanding of different religious beliefs and funeral practices
