Framing Carpenters can work on residential and commercial construction projects, in furniture manufacturing and in cabinetry shops. They construct the structural supports for buildings, while Cabinet Builders and Finish Carpenters often work on interior renovation projects. Framing Carpenters may be employed by a framing or general contractor, or they can work on their own and negotiate with suppliers, clients, engineers and other specialists, such as architects. They may work with a variety of hand and power tools to rough cut the lumber, shape furniture components or join pieces together in structures.
A Framing Carpenter works with wooden construction materials to build and repair residential and commercial structures. Their duties include selecting appropriate construction materials, planning construction jobs and monitoring code compliance and safety standards on construction sites.
A Framing Carpenter should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Framing Carpenter should be able to execute:
- Rough framing and building wooden structures, including walls, roofs and flooring
- Doing joinery work that includes installing joists and studs, installing flashing and securing structural supports
- Performing finish work, such as new moldings and interior fixtures
- Designing custom furniture, cabinets, cupboards and interior walls
- Estimating material and time costs for projects, including costs for labor, wood materials and fasteners
- Choosing the appropriate wood materials for interior and outdoor projects, choosing high-quality materials and matching clients’ budgets
A competitive Framing Carpenter will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
- A high school diploma and on-the-job apprenticeship
- Training and experience with power and hand tools, such as saws, drills, chisels, fasteners and sanders
- Knowledge of wood species, including manufactured wood products such as plywood and pressure-treated lumber
- Joinery skills and knowledge of fasteners, including nails, wood glue and various dry joints
- Creativity and the ability to make and follow design plans
- Ability to follow health and safety codes
