A Farm Hand, or Agricultural Worker, is a person who assists farmers or ranchers with the day-to-day workings of a farm. Some of their main duties—much of which take place outdoors—include planting and tending crops, feeding and raising livestock and operating farm machinery.
A Farm Hand should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Farm Hand should be able to execute:
- Feeding livestock or guiding them between pastures
- Cultivating, sowing and harvesting crops
- Operating hand tools and heavy equipment such as tractors
- Shearing, milking and otherwise tending to livestock
- Cleaning and sterilizing equipment and machinery
- Maintaining farm buildings and performing necessary repairs
A competitive Farm Hand will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
- A basic understanding of animal husbandry and crop cultivation
- The ability to perform manual work
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for working with farming equipment
- Strong communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with other Farm Hands
- Comfort performing repetitive tasks
