What does a Exercise Physiologist do?
An Exercise Physiologist, or Clinical Exercise Physiologist, develops exercise plans that meet patients’ health and wellness needs. Common duties you may want to add to your Exercise Physiologist job description include reviewing patients’ health histories and family medical histories, conducting tests to assess patients’ current fitness levels and writing and implementing custom exercise guidelines.
Responsibilities
A Exercise Physiologist should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Exercise Physiologist should be able to execute:
  • Becoming familiar with a patient’s history by reading medical records and interviewing patients about their symptoms, lifestyle and family histories
  • Administering strength, endurance, flexibility and other tests to assess patients’ physical performance
  • Monitoring patients’ heart rhythm, heart rate, oxygen saturation levels, breathing rate, blood pressure levels and other vital signs before, during and after testing
  • Analyzing the test results and patient background information to identify their specific fitness needs
  • Working with patients to develop appropriate fitness goals and developing detailed fitness plans to help them achieve these objectives
  • Educating and advising patients on how to properly perform exercises
Required Skills
A competitive Exercise Physiologist will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Extensive knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, exercise science and nutrition
  • Active listening and interview skills to gather information from patients
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact professionally and effectively with patients
  • Familiarity with exercise equipment, such as free weights, weight machines, resistance bands, stationary bicycles and treadmills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to devise exercise plans based on the findings of tests, interviews and medical record reviews
  • Writing skills to explain exercises and other elements of a physical plan in a clear, concise manner
