Diversity Managers serve as leaders in developing a diverse, inclusive work environment. Their purpose is to move the corporate culture toward one that embraces and promotes diversity. In some companies, they’re the top diversity-focused employee, with others under their direction. Larger companies sometimes also have a Chief Diversity Officer above the Manager. A large portion of the Diversity Manager’s work relates to human resources activities, particularly diverse recruiting, hiring and employee retention. They work with key personnel, such as hiring managers and HR staff, to create an environment that invites and promotes diversity and inclusion. They’re also a diversity expert and resource for all other employees and departments.
What does a Diversity Manager do?
A Diversity Manager, or Diversity and Inclusion Manager, leads a company’s diversity and inclusion initiatives to improve the corporate culture. Their duties include developing policies, training employees and facilitating programs.
Responsibilities
A Diversity Manager should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Diversity Manager should be able to execute:
  • Reviewing current processes and policies to determine if they support diversity and inclusion work
  • Developing new diversity and inclusion initiatives and strategies
  • Implementing established diversity and inclusion programs
  • Evaluating diversity initiatives by tracking metrics for the programs
  • Creating diversity training programs for employees
  • Working with hiring managers to improve diversity throughout the recruiting and hiring process
Required Skills
A competitive Diversity Manager will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Awareness of diversity and inclusion concerns
  • Strong communication skills with all types of people
  • Ability to motivate and influence people
  • Multitasking skills to manage multiple diversity projects at once
  • Familiarity with employment regulations, diversity best practices and standard HR practices
  • Strong teaching skills
