Crisis Counselors help individuals navigate their emotional responses to overwhelming situations, such as trauma, grief or mental health crises. They may work as part of an overall care team in an inpatient environment, providing helpful services for those struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Crisis Counselors might also work for state, local or national suicide and mental health hotlines or with organizations that travel into areas experiencing crises to provide mental health services for victims.
What does a Crisis Counselor do?
A Crisis Counselor, sometimes called a Trauma Counselor, provides caring support and assistance when someone is involved in a mental health crisis. Common duties listed in a Crisis Counselor job description include helping others develop coping strategies, providing front-line emotional support during a crisis and acting as a referral source.
Responsibilities
A Crisis Counselor should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Crisis Counselor should be able to execute:
  • Assessing clients’ mental health to provide treatment recommendations and immediate support
  • Developing crisis intervention plans to help stabilize patients experiencing a crisis
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed clinical records regarding treatment and counseling sessions
  • Providing appropriate referrals to other providers and services to support holistic treatment
  • Collaborating with comprehensive care teams, including Social Workers, Doctors, Nurses and Therapists
Required Skills
A competitive Crisis Counselor will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Conflict-resolution skills, as Crisis Counselors generally face tense and challenging situations
  • Strong communication and active listening skills
  • Knowledge of and experience in deploying crisis intervention techniques
  • Empathy, compassion and a desire to serve a certain population
