Caseworkers typically work for government agencies like social services to serve others the best they can. They keep detailed reports on their clients, which they update periodically to measure their progress. Their job is to help their clients gain access to rehabilitation programs to overcome substance addiction. They also help foster kids obtain benefits like healthcare and help individuals obtain financial aid to pay for schooling or medical treatment. They may also conduct home visits to ensure that their client has a stable home environment that benefits their progress.
What does a Caseworker do?
A Caseworker, or Welfare Worker, is responsible for helping adults, children and families find and obtain government resources like healthcare services, financial aid or counseling. Their duties include meeting with clients to identify their needs, using resources in the government, healthcare and financial service industries to offer assistance to their clients and communicating with their clients regularly.
Responsibilities
A Caseworker should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Caseworker should be able to execute:
  • Filing and maintaining case history reports
  • Interviewing clients to assess their situational needs
  • Determining which services and assistance are necessary
  • Serving as a liaison between the client and social, financial, health and legal services
  • Planning regular follow-ups to assess progress and additional needs
  • Developing a plan of action to improve the client’s well-being
  • Reviewing and modifying plans as circumstances change for the individual
Required Skills
A competitive Caseworker will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Active listening, to better understand the needs of their client so they can create a plan of action
  • Social context to understand the challenges and opportunities clients face
  • Written and verbal communication to interface with government organizations, courts/probate officers and essentials services
  • Critical thinking and decision making to plan the best course of action for their clients
  • Problem solving to improve the well-being of their clients through advocacy
