Cardiovascular Technicians support physicians by operating imaging equipment that helps inform the physician of any important diagnostic information before, during or after medical procedures. Although Cardiovascular Technicians broadly assist with lung and heart conditions, they may specialize in certain types of equipment operation or testing. These roles include Cardiovascular Invasive Specialists, Cardiographic or Electrocardiogram Technicians and Pulmonary Function Technologists. Within their specialty, Cardiovascular Technicians perform tests to help with diagnosis and treatment. This often involves hands-on work such as cardiac catheterization, heart stress tests and spirometry tests.
A Cardiovascular Technician, also known as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer or Cardiovascular Technologist, uses special technology to create images or perform tests that help physicians assess and diagnose medical conditions and perform medical procedures. Their duties include operating imaging equipment to create diagnostic images or perform tests, preparing patients for and monitoring them during cardiovascular medical procedures, and analyzing and reviewing images and records.
A Cardiovascular Technician should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Cardiovascular Technician should be able to execute:
- Briefing patients on medical procedures and interviewing them in regard to medical history
- Preparing and operating diagnostic imaging equipment to create images or perform medical tests
- Analyzing tests and images to create summarized reports for physicians
- Recording and organizing patient medical records
- Monitoring patients’ blood pressure and heart rate during open-heart surgery and pacemaker or stent insertions
- Performing electrocardiogram tests to monitor a patient’s heart performance
- Preparing patients for medical procedures by performing necessary shaving or cleansing of a surgical area
A competitive Cardiovascular Technician will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
- Technical skills to maintain and operate complex equipment and computerized tools
- Physical stamina to work for long periods or physically assist patients
- Interpersonal and bedside manner skills to perform tasks effectively with emotional sensitivity to the stress and discomfort of patients
- Communication skills to brief and interview patients as well as communicate with physicians, technicians and other medical team members
