Art Teachers foster an appreciation of art in elementary, middle and high school students. By teaching them to draw, paint, make ceramics and produce other art types, they encourage students to express themselves and inspire creative thinking. What does a Art Teacher do?
An Art Teacher, sometimes called an Elementary, Middle School or High School Art Teacher, teaches students about art history and techniques. Typical Art Teacher duties and responsibilities include creating lesson plans based on a school’s established art curricula, demonstrating techniques for different art types and assessing students’ mastery of topics covered in classes.
Responsibilities
A Art Teacher should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Art Teacher should be able to execute:
  • Producing lesson plans that follow established curricula and achieve student learning objectives
  • Setting up the classroom for daily activities and cleaning the supplies
  • Demonstrating techniques and producing sample works to help students understand concepts
  • Providing students with guidance and individualized instruction
  • Preparing and delivering lectures related to art history
  • Inventorying, organizing and ordering art supplies
  • Grading student assignments and providing written feedback
  • Recording grades for assignments, exams and participation
Required Skills
A competitive Art Teacher will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • In-depth knowledge of different art media, such as graphite pencils, charcoals, watercolors, acrylic paints, oil paints and clay
  • Understanding of age-appropriate teaching methods, art criticism and art history
  • Effective verbal communication and presentation skills to provide instruction
  • Strong written communication skills to provide feedback on assignments
  • Interpersonal skills to ensure positive interactions with students, parents and other faculty members
  • Critical thinking and judgment skills to assess students’ work and performance
  • Time management and organizational skills to manage daily lesson plans
  • Computer skills to use email, word processing, database and spreadsheet software
