An Activity Assistant helps keep people entertained. In long-term care facilities, Activity Assistants create opportunities for socialization, exercise and creative thinking that can improve residents’ quality of life. Aboard cruise ships, an Activity Assistant ensures that passengers enjoy their vacations and have plenty to do both while at sea and in ports of call. As a result, they can have a big impact on customer satisfaction. Activity Assistants working in summer camps, schools and daycare centers provide opportunities for learning and enrichment, contributing to the organizations’ success.
What does a Activity Assistant do?
An Activity Assistant, or Activity Aide, assists with the planning and execution of recreational events and outings, working everywhere from nursing homes to summer camps to cruise ships. Their duties include coming up with ideas for activities, creating activity schedules and maintaining records of events held.
Responsibilities
A Activity Assistant should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Activity Assistant should be able to execute:
  • Brainstorming ideas for activities
  • Creating schedules that detail the activities by day, week and month
  • Advertising activities that are open to the public
  • Attending or leading activities to ensure that events go smoothly
  • Adhering to budgetary guidelines when planning activities
  • Working with vendors to provide food, music, supplies and services for activities as needed
  • Soliciting feedback from participants to identify what worked well and what areas of improvement exist
  • Keeping detailed records of activities to track participation rates, costs and other metrics
Required Skills
A competitive Activity Assistant will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Creative thinking skills to continuously plan unique events
  • Budgeting skills to control activity costs
  • Organizational skills to plan multiple events at once
  • Interpersonal skills to interact positively with other staff members and activity participants
  • Computer skills to use email, word processing, recordkeeping and spreadsheet software
  • Problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles before and during activities
  • Written communication skills to compile participant surveys and activity reports
  • Knowledge of CPR and basic first aid
