Whether employed by a travel agency or a hospitality business, a Travel Agent directly contributes to the success of an organization. By executing their assigned duties and responsibilities well, they provide exceptional service to clients to increase customer loyalty, boost customer satisfaction rates and encourage word-of-mouth referrals. Through cross-selling and education, they encourage clients to book transportation tickets, events tickets, accommodations, dining reservations, cruises, tours, spa appointments and activities. In the process, they may generate sales or commissions for their employers and impact the organizations’ bottom lines positively.
What does a Travel Agent do?
A Travel Agent, or Travel Manager, is responsible for helping individuals and businesses plan for work and personal travel. Their duties include advising clients on the features of various travel destinations, creating itineraries for dining, transportation, sightseeing and recreation and booking transportation tickets, activities, vehicle rentals and hotel accommodations.
Responsibilities
A Travel Agent should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Travel Agent should be able to execute:
  • Offering clients advice about travel destinations
  • Helping clients establish realistic budgets for their trips and working to develop travel packages that align with those budgets
  • Researching fares and rates to find the best deals on transportation, dining, accommodations and activities
  • Educating clients about safety and security while traveling
  • Determining necessary immunizations and travel documents
  • Creating day-by-day itineraries personalized based on clients’ ages, interests, preferences and budgets
Required Skills
A competitive Travel Agent will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Extensive knowledge of US and foreign travel destinations
  • Research skills to gather rates and compile lists of restaurants, sights and activities for clients
  • Customer service skills to fully meet clients’ needs
  • Organizational skills to manage paperwork for multiple clients
  • Problem-solving skills to address issues that arise before and during clients’ trips
  • Computer skills in using e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, customer relationship management and other types of software
