Prompt Engineers provide essential support for the increasingly technical aspects of content creation, data analysis and customer service. They work with a variety of teams, sometimes including a business’ partners or clients, to improve the performance of AI-generated content and other machine learning processes. Prompt Engineers must think proactively and creatively while keeping AI risks in mind, as they create and edit prompts and help to train AI to perform specific tasks for an organization.
A Prompt Engineer, or Prompt Designer, provides support for businesses in creating and managing AI prompts to ensure accurate, productive automated AI processes. Duties commonly listed in a Prompt Engineer job description include analyzing and researching AI technologies to stay abreast of best practices, creating and editing prompts and developing algorithms to support positive machine learning outcomes.
A Prompt Engineer should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Prompt Engineer should be able to execute:
- Designing or writing prompts to support specific AI outcomes
- Collaborating with teams to refine prompts to develop better prompt processes to support desired outcomes
- Analyzing AI performance and making process and algorithm updates for performance improvement
- Continued research and education on the ever-changing AI field to ensure updated best practices
- Preparing data for use in updating or training machine learning processes
- Providing and explaining reports regarding AI outcomes and performance
A competitive Prompt Engineer will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
- Specific coding and programming languages, particularly those related to your business’s apps and software
- SQL or other data reporting skills
- Problem-solving and analytical or data analysis skillsPrompt-writing and query skills
- Content writing knowledge or skills, particularly basic grammar
- Knowledge of tools such as ChatGPT and other AI platforms
