A Mental Health Counselor works with clients who have mental health needs. Often, they provide these services in the context of a larger treatment program, working individually with patients to help them develop the skills they need to work toward discharge and a healthier lifestyle. They might also work one-on-one with clients or provide services as part of outpatient programs or individual practices. In all these cases, these professionals are essential to supporting clients’ mental health.
A Mental Health Counselor, who might also be a Social Worker, Therapist or Clinician, works directly with clients to establish an understanding of mental health issues and address them through counseling. Some responsibilities that are common in Mental Health Counselor job descriptions include treating patients with talk therapies, educating clients on coping strategies and assessing mental health conditions to offer recommendations for treatment.
A Mental Health Counselor should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Mental Health Counselor should be able to execute:
- Accurately assess client needs
- Create treatment plans for their clients or work with other care providers within a facility to develop individual treatment plans to support positive outcomes for each patient
- Educate clients on coping skills and provide education about diagnoses
- Refer clients for other services available in the community and communicate with other providers so they are able to refer clients for other services as needed
A competitive Mental Health Counselor will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
- Strong knowledge of mental health disorders, as well as psychology, therapy and counseling approaches
- Strong analytical skills to assess a patient’s situation and build treatment plans
- Excellent listening skills to best understand a patient’s issues and concerns
- Excellent communication skills to effectively guide patients and establish trust
- Crisis intervention skills to respond to patients in acute distress
