Mechanics typically work for auto repair shops or auto dealerships, but they may also operate their own service shop. They use their knowledge of car parts, diagnostic tools and repair procedures to isolate issues with motor vehicles, make repairs and run tests. Their job is to work closely with other Mechanics to complete repair jobs in a timely and efficient manner. They may also be responsible for determining the cost of certain repairs or maintenance procedures to create invoices for their customers.
What does a Mechanic do?
A Mechanic, or Licensed Mechanic, is responsible for investigating problems with different types of motor vehicles and making repairs accordingly. Their duties include communicating with vehicle owners to discuss their concerns, carrying out routine maintenance procedures on motor vehicles and replacing parts on motor vehicles to promote their functionality.
Responsibilities
A Mechanic should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Mechanic should be able to execute:
  • Assess vehicles and/or machinery to accurately diagnose and repair issues
  • Liaise with clients to determine their automotive requirements and communicate vehicular defects or problems
  • Provide routine inspections of vehicles and inform clients of any issues
  • Prepare quotes and work estimates as requested
  • Keep an accurate log of all work performed
  • Maintain and clean garage equipment and tools to ensure they are kept in a safe and usable condition at all times
Required Skills
A competitive Mechanic will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Experience conducting routine services and vehicle maintenance
  • Demonstrated experience inspecting vehicles for faults and repairs
  • Practical knowledge of vehicle diagnostic equipment
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Sound problem-solving skills
  • Completion of an apprenticeship is advantageous
