Geospatial Analysts combine geographical expertise with spatial analysis skills to study and document geographical features. They gather data from a variety of sources to do comprehensive research. People holding these positions work in several different fields, including climate science, real estate, military, retail and resource planning, applying geographical analysis to that particular field. They often use the data to solve problems in the field or provide information that helps shape decisions the company makes. Creating maps using mapping software is often a part of the job. These analysts also present the information they discover using written documents and presentations.
What does a Geospatial Analyst do?
A Geospatial Analyst, or Geospatial Specialist, uses geographical data from a variety of sources to better understand real-world situations or problems. Their duties include analyzing geographical data, tracking changes to the geography of an area and applying the data to various situations.
Responsibilities
A Geospatial Analyst should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Geospatial Analyst should be able to execute:
  • Studying various types of geographic data, such as maps, aerial photos, environmental samples and records
  • Analyzing specific geographical features
  • Monitoring geographical changes
  • Using GIS technology and other software programs
  • Presenting data
  • Creating maps to depict different data
Required Skills
A competitive Geospatial Analyst will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with mapping software and tools
  • Strong math skills
  • Organizational skills to work with large amounts of data
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work well as part of a larger team
