Fabricators are necessary for manufacturers to deliver reliable and efficient machinery or products. Their primary job is to fit and install parts for various technologies, including airplanes, computers, electric motors and devices. They also wield and solder pieces together or attach them with bolts and nuts. Some specialized Fabricators overlay fiberglass onto molds to create protective surfaces for vehicles and machinery. For example, in the aeronautics field, these surfaces protect sensitive engine parts from exposure to wind and UV radiation.
What does a Fabricator do?
A Fabricator, or Assembler, uses machines and hand tools to make components for larger products, such as airplanes or machines. Their duties include reading blueprints and schematics, aligning components and using hand tools or machines to complete the assembly process.
Responsibilities
A Fabricator should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Fabricator should be able to execute:
  • Read detailed schematics for complex machines
  • Use hand tools and power tools to trim, cut and fit components into the final product.
  • Weld and solder pieces together
  • Align components and connect them with bolts and screws
  • Work with collaborative robots (cobots) to produce and assemble components
  • Find faulty components in defective products to fix them
Required Skills
A competitive Fabricator will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Technical skills and the ability to understand blueprints, schematic diagrams and technical manuals
  • Technical skills and the ability to understand blueprints, schematic diagrams and technical manuals
  • Mechanical skills and knowledge of basic machinery, including computers, tools, collaborative robots and other devices
  • The ability to see colors, since wires are often color coded
  • Physical strength to lift heavy machinery, tools and components
  • Dexterity and good hand-eye coordination, with the ability to manipulate and assemble very large and extremely small components
