Court Reporters are an important part of the justice system, as they create an accurate record of every legal proceeding, ensuring judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and other individuals know exactly what happened during each case. Their main job is to use stenography equipment, digital recording devices and other tools to produce word-for-word transcripts. If you manage a law firm or work for a courthouse, you may also need your Court Reporter to administer an oath before each witness testifies.

What does a Court Reporter do?

A Court Reporter is responsible for creating an accurate record of what happens during hearings and other court matters. Their duties include attending legal proceedings, creating verbatim transcripts and administering oaths before witnesses give their testimony.

Responsibilities

A Court Reporter should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Court Reporter should be able to execute:

Attending in-person and virtual court proceedings
Using steno machines and other equipment to transcribe spoken testimony
Documenting hand gestures, facial expressions and other forms of nonverbal communication
Playing back portions of a hearing, deposition or other legal proceedings at a judge’s or attorney’s request
Providing completed transcripts to the parties involved in each case
Requesting clarification when a person’s testimony is difficult to hear

Required Skills

A competitive Court Reporter will have certain skills and qualifications, including:

Familiarity with legal and medical terminology
Ability to operate stenography equipment and other tools used to take notes and produce transcripts of court proceedings
Excellent written communication skills, including a strong command of grammar and mechanics
Skill in using shorthand to take notes during court proceedings
Strong attention to detail, especially when recording gestures and other types of nonverbal communication
