Hospitals and health organizations seeking new Clinical Specialists can differ on the amount of experience they require in a quality candidate. It’s not uncommon for companies to hire Clinical Specialists with little to no unsupervised experience practicing medicine, as many candidates have spent months or years as an intern. Some companies also accept experience in similar roles such as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician’s Assistant (PA) as they each require a similar set of skills.
What does a Clinical Specialist do?
A Clinical Specialist is part of a medical team. They usually specialize in certain types of treatment or in the treatment of very specific medical conditions that require more in-depth knowledge than a general practitioner may possess. Teams call on Clinical Specialists to aid in diagnosing and treating diseases or conditions that require specific approaches and specialty training.
Responsibilities
A Clinical Specialist should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Clinical Specialist should be able to execute:
  • Communicating with patients about their conditions in layperson’s terms
  • Operating diagnostic equipment in a lab setting
  • Coordinating with patients and their families to schedule treatment
  • Researching the latest discoveries and treatment modalities
  • Following up with other medical professionals involved with the patient’s care to ensure proper treatment is administered at all times
  • Performing physical and preliminary examinations of patients, including drawing blood
Required Skills
A competitive Clinical Specialist will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • A strong sense of empathy to understand a patient’s perspective and adjust advice accordingly
  • Time management and organizational skills to effectively balance daily record-keeping and patient-facing tasks
  • A wide breadth of general medical knowledge with an in-depth understanding of their specific specialty
