Art Restorers apply scientific principles and art knowledge to preserve and restore various types of artwork. They’re responsible for evaluating artwork or artifacts to determine the condition and create a restoration plan. An Art Restorer can work for an organization, such as a museum, gallery or historical society, or they can work independently for private collectors who have fine art that they want to have restored and preserved.
What does a Art Restorer do?
An Art Restorer, or Art Conservator, repairs or restores various pieces of fine artwork. Their duties include assessing artwork, treating art pieces and recordkeeping.
Responsibilities
A Art Restorer should be able to fulfill various duties and responsibilities. The following are some duties and responsibilities a Art Restorer should be able to execute:
  • Examining each piece to assess its condition and restoration needs
  • Applying treatments to repair and preserve the artwork
  • Working with scientists and other Art Restorers to decide on the proper treatment
  • Learning about the latest restoration methods
  • Creating estimates to restore and preserve artwork for private clients
  • Recording information about the artwork’s condition and treatments used
  • Advising curators and other organization staff members on restoring and handling artwork
  • Controlling the environment to prevent damage or deterioration
Required Skills
A competitive Art Restorer will have certain skills and qualifications, including:
  • Experience as a fine artist or in studying fine art
  • Collaboration skills to work with curators, scientists and other organization staff members
  • Knowledge of art restoration and preservation techniques
  • Careful handling skills and gentle hands to protect the artwork
  • Scientific background
  • Ability to develop and maintain processes for handling artwork
  • Written and verbal communication skills to work with other team members and publish research on projects
